As a proud member of the Housing, Safety, and Community Committee, Tiawana Brown has been a consistent and passionate advocate for housing that meets the needs of all residents—not just the few who can afford rising market prices.
Tiawana believes that safe, stable, and affordable housing is a human right, and she has worked to ensure that long-time residents, working families, and justice-impacted individuals are not left behind in Charlotte’s growth.
During her first term, she supported the allocation of $100 million to expand affordable housing options—a historic investment to address the housing crisis head-on. But for Tiawana, affordability is not just about units—it’s about dignity, stability, and ownership.
Her vision for housing in District 3 and across Charlotte includes:
- Incentivizing and supporting the development of more mixed-income housing that fosters diverse, thriving communities without isolating low-income residents.
- Promoting innovative models of development, such as land trusts, co-ops, and community ownership, that prioritize long-term affordability and resident control.
- Helping low-income residents become homebuyer-ready by connecting them with resources, education, and financial tools to move from renting to owning.
- Advocating for policies that allow residents to remain in their homes, including assistance with property taxes, emergency repairs, and protections against displacement.
Tiawana has also led community conversations about what equitable development should look like, making sure neighbors—not just developers—shape the future of our communities.
